Last Thursday, a jury in St. Louis awarded more than $70 million to a woman from California who alleged that years of using Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder caused her to develop ovarian cancer in 2012.

In the lawsuit, she claimed Johnson & Johnson knew about the increased risk of ovarian cancer from its talcum powder products but failed to warn consumers.

This is the third talcum powder lawsuit this year to end in a multimillion-dollar jury verdict against Johnson & Johnson.

In February, the family of a woman from Alabama who died from ovarian cancer was awarded $10 million in compensation and $62 million in punitive damages. In May, a South Dakota ovarian cancer survivor was awarded $55 million after a jury decided her cancer was caused by frequent use of Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder products.

Approximately 2,000 other women have similar lawsuits against Johnson & Johnson claiming that Baby Powder and other talcum powder products are responsible for their ovarian cancer.

Johnson & Johnson has maintained that these products are safe and do not cause ovarian cancer.

However, while there are some studies showing a negligible link between ovarian cancer and the use of talcum powder, there are dozens of others showing that using talcum powder increases the risk of developing ovarian cancer.

For example, a 1982 study found that women who used talcum powder for feminine hygiene when they were ovulating had a 92 percent increased risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

More recently, a 2013 study found that women who used talcum powder near their genitals had a 20 to 30 percent increased risk of contracting ovarian cancer.

If you were diagnosed with ovarian cancer and you used talcum powder products for feminine hygiene, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
