North Carolina’s 2016 Holiday Booze It & Lose It enforcement campaign resulted in 2,664 arrests for driving under the influence during the holiday season, which amounts to 116 drivers per day. There were 2,400 arrests for alcohol impairment and 264 for impairment from drugs.

Mecklenburg County, which includes Charlotte, had the third-highest number of arrests in the state with 162. Wake County had the most arrests with 247, while Guilford County came in second with 177.

There were 359 deaths from drunk driving accidents during the campaign, a 16.7 percent decrease compared to 2015.

State and local law enforcement set up 8,439 sobriety checkpoints and saturation controls and made arrests or issued citations for 108,951 criminal and traffic violations.

BOOZE IT & LOSE IT CAMPAIGN

The Holiday Booze It & Lose It campaign is a four-week effort started by the Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) 22 years ago.

It encourages North Carolina residents and visitors to drive responsibly during the holiday season and aims to increase awareness and education about the dangers of driving while impaired and the penalties associated with it.

This year’s marketing campaign used the slogan, “Don’t Drink and Drive. You’re Smarter Than That.” The North Carolina Department of Transportation and GHSP reminded people to have a designated driver, download a ride-sharing smartphone app, use public transportation or call a taxi instead of driving home drunk.

Campaigns like these help to get drunk drivers off the road. Driving while intoxicated is one of the leading causes of accidents in the nation, and these accidents often result in serious injuries or even death.

Unfortunately, a lot of people continue to get behind the wheel when they are impaired by drugs or alcohol. However, victims of these crashes may have legal options.
