Matthews, NC (December 9, 2018) – This afternoon, a tree fell on top of a vehicle, which caused the driver to become involved in a fatal accident in Matthews. The accident happened at 4:30 p.m. on East John Street.
Officers found that a tree had fallen on a vehicle when the vehicle had been headed eastbound. Before the vehicle was in the area of the intersection at Charles Buckley Way, the tree fell. The vehicle then went through the lawn of the Matthews Church of God and struck the front of the church. Minor structural damage resulted.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop in a next-door yard. When medics arrived at the scene of the accident, they found the driver was unfortunately deceased.
One other person received injuries in the accident and has not yet been identified. At the time, the road was closed for quite some time while police investigated.
