Abbeville, SC (October 20, 1977) – According to Abbeville County Schools, one of three buses returning to Westwood Elementary School after a field trip was involved in a crash that injured 19 of the almost 30 students on board. 16 of the children had to be taken to a hospital for medical treatment.

The crash happened at approximately 1:20 PM on Highway 25 at Nation Road. The bus ran off of the edge of the highway and came to a stop in some nearby woods. The children had to be evacuated from the bus through the rear door. George McKinney, an emergency management coordinator said that a medical helicopter was needed for several of the children.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation and there is no update on the well-being of the children who were injured at this time.
