Alexander County, NC (December 17, 2018) – In Alexander County, more than a dozen students were rushed to the hospital following a school bus accident this morning.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol stated that the accident happened around 7:36 a.m. on Icard Ridge Road. At the time, a Toyota had been traveling south when it suddenly crossed over the center line and collided with a school bus. The bus went off the road and overturned as a result.
The bus had been heading to the West Alexander Middle School and had 19 students on board. The students and bus driver were all taken to the hospital. Twelve of the students received injuries and one was listed in critical condition with especially serious injuries. Their conditions is not known at this time.
The driver of the other vehicle was identified as 56-year-old Kimberly Ann Austin. She was taken to the hospital with various injuries and, since then, has been charged with driving while impaired and driving left of center.
At this time, the bus accident is still being investigated.
