Georgia Hit And Run

Atlanta, GA - Woman On Moped Struck By CarThe legal ramifications for the perpetrator of a hit and run are vastly more severe than those of a standard car accident. Fleeing the scene of an accident will most likely result in both civil and criminal consequences. Being in possession of a valid driver’s license means that you have agreed to certain responsibilities while you are behind the wheel of a car. In terms of an accident, you are required by law to exchange information with the other driver or drivers involved, possibly calling the police if the accident was severe enough to warrant it, and absolutely call the police if anyone is injured and staying with them until help arrives.

All of these actions are only possible if the driver stops at the scene of the accident. To flee the scene is to eschew every rule of the road involving participation in an accident. In addition to the traditional ingredients that make up a standard personal injury or personal property damage lawsuit, hit and runs will also include something known as punitive damages. Punitive damages are expressly designed to punish and deter “bad behavior”. That is, behavior that goes against the basic moral code we all agree to in order to function as a society. The greater the sin, the greater the punitive damage. The offender will also face criminal charges as well.
