The Bluffton Police Traffic Team is hoping to reduce accidents by raising awareness and cracking down on dangerous driving habits that increase the risk of crashes and injuries.

Pulled Over

The team is primarily focused on things like speeding, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, and using seat belts. However, it is also watching for other bad habits that cause a lot of crashes, including:

  • Failing to yield the right of way
  • Driving too fast given the road conditions
  • Tailgating other vehicles

In the case of tailgating, the law says you need to be traveling three seconds behind the car in front of you.

An easy way to determine if you are following too closely is to count the number of seconds between when the car in front of you passes a fixed object and when you pass the same object. Start counting when the car passes the object and if you do not reach three seconds before passing the same object, you are too close.

The Bluffton Police Traffic Team is timing the distance between vehicles so it can stop any cars that are following too closely.

Driving too fast for the road conditions is illegal under S.C. Code Ann. §56-5-1520. The law states that people cannot drive on a highway at a speed greater than “is reasonable and prudent under the conditions and having regard to the actual and potential hazards then existing.”

This usually means that you should not exceed the speed limit. However, even if you are not breaking the speed limit, you could be cited for speeding if you drive fast when there is bad weather, heavy traffic or road construction.
