Davie County, NC (December 21, 2018) – Police say that a fire truck accident took place that caused injuries to four people, including a child. The accident happened on Junction Road.
At the time, the driver of the fire truck was heading south when they suddenly went off the road, overcorrected, and crossed the center line before they struck a Camaro. A firefighter identified as Ashley Hepler had been driving at the time. She attempted to swerve to avoid the Camaro, but the back of the truck collided with the vehicle. A large amount of water in the truck made it difficult to control once it started sliding off the road.
39-year-old Brianne Calhoun from the Camaro was seriously injured with head and spine injuries. At this time, she is in stable condition. Calhoun’s 10-year-old daughter was also injured and transferred to the hospital but she is expected to be okay.
Hepler was training when the accident took place. Investigators took a closer look and found that the vehicle had a steering wheel malfunction that caused her to lose control. The Cooleemee Fire Department is now looking into that issue.
Hepler and one other person in the firetruck were taken to the hospital for injuries but they are expected to recover.
The North Carolina Highway Patrol continues their investigation into the accident at this time.
