The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours while police investigated the accident. Drivers were told to avoid the area until further notice.

Those in the area said it appeared as if it was a head-on collision but this has not yet been confirmed and the names of those involved have not been released.

The Georgia State Patrol continues to conduct their investigation into the incident.
