Durham, NC (November 18, 2018) – A woman was struck and killed in an Amtrak train accident that happened at the intersection of Swift Avenue and West Pettigrew Street.
The accident took place around 7:15 a.m. in Durham. At the time, the woman, who was identified as 50-year-old Judy Estrada, had been walking across the train tracks toward West Main Street. She was struck at that time.
When emergency responders came to the scene, they pronounced her deceased. Nobody in the train received injuries.
Investigators said that, upon closer inspection, the train arms came down and all safety mechanisms, had been working at the time of the accident. The train operator went on their brakes and sounded the horn but they were not able to stop in time.
