Police say that, at the time, the deputy who has since been identified as Rhett Hoy, was responding to a domestic disturbance call with his lights and sirens activated. He was involved in a collision with a truck at the intersection of Highway 191 in Mills River.

Hoy received serious injuries due to the accident. He was taken to the Mission Hospital. At the time, police say that the roads were wet, as it had just been raining and there was heavy fog.

The accident is under investigation by the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
