Sadly, many of last year’s deaths could have been prevented, as more than 50 percent of the 635 motor vehicle occupants who died were not wearing seat belts.

Other factors in deadly traffic fatalities last year included speeding, driving under the influence and distracted driving.

One of the most common forms of distracted driving is texting while driving. This is illegal under South Carolina law, although recent reports have shown enforcement of these laws is not consistent across all jurisdictions.

The poor condition of South Carolina roads has also contributed to deadly traffic accidents. While a long-time concern, legislators have been unable to secure dependable funding to improve state highways, bridges and roads.

Approximately 15 percent of the state’s traffic deaths last year were pedestrians and bicyclists, an increase versus 2015. This suggests that infrastructure such as bike lanes and sidewalks are necessary to improve safety and reduce motorist traffic.

While there was a tiny decrease in traffic fatalities in South Carolina last year, traffic deaths across the country soared.

In the first nine months of 2016, traffic fatalities increased by eight percent versus the same period in 2015. The increase outpaced the increase in miles traveled by Americans during that time, which was only three percent.
