McDuffie County, GA – One Woman Loses Life in Serious Fatal Crash

McDuffie County, GA (November 9, 2018) – In McDuffie County, one woman lost her life in a serious fatal crash.

McDuffie County, GA (November 9, 2018) – In McDuffie County, one woman lost her life in a serious fatal crash and now another person is facing charges. The woman has since been identified as 64-year-old Carol Darlene Atkinson.

At the time, Atkinson was a passenger in one vehicle, which was struck by another vehicle being driven by 21-year-old Cassandra Smith of Dearing.

At the time, police say that Smith had been traveling south on Georgia Highway 17 while the other vehicle was headed north. Atkinson was a passenger in her husband’s 2012 Chevy Silverado. The husband has been identified as 66-year-old Johnny Atkinson. Smith failed to maintain her lane, which put her directly into the path of the vehicle that the Atkinsons were traveling in.

Smith told police that she isn’t sure what happened and why she lost control. The vehicles were both badly damaged at the scene of the accident.

Carol was taken to the hospital where she was then pronounced deceased. Johnny Atkinson, Smith, and both of her child passengers were taken to various hospitals for treatment. It was then that they determined Smith had been driving under the influence, and she is now facing a variety of charges.
