NHTSA  REGULATIONS TO PREVENT DISTRACTED DRIVING

In an effort to reduce distracted driving and the fatalities caused by this behavior, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have been searching for ways to reduce distracted driving and make our roads safer.

Last week, the NHTSA released guidelines for manufacturers of aftermarket electronic devices for cars, as the use of mobile devices is one of the leading causes of distracted driving. The guidelines encourage manufacturers to develop product features that help keep drivers’ eyes on the road instead of on their cellphones or other electronic devices.

For example, products could have a feature allowing them to link to vehicles’ infotainment systems. The guidelines also encourage adding a simplified user interface, or driver mode, to electronic devices. These kinds of features preserve device functionality while limiting the amount of time drivers’ eyes are off the road.

The NHTSA’s guidelines are based on the best research available, according to U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx.

TIPS TO AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING ACCIDENTS

The NHTSA advises drivers to take the following safety and defensive driving precautions to reduce the risk of a distracted driving crash:

  • Put electronic devices down and focus on the road.
  • If a device will be used to provide directions, program it with your destination before departing on your trip.
  • Passengers should ask drivers to put down distracting devices while driving and offer to make calls or texts for drivers.
  • Wear your seat belt to protect yourself against other distracted drivers.
