Oconee County, SC (October 20, 2018) – On Friday afternoon on Highway 123 a pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train. The incident occurred at about 2:00 PM across from Hartville Village near Defore road.

The train struck the pedestrian at a crossing for a private road, according to a spokesman for Norfolk Southern Corporation. It was headed to Toccoa, GA after finishing work on a service job. The victim, a 28-year-old from Anderson County, South Carolina was working his first day at the job site as a crossing attendant and was working when he was struck. The spokesman for NSC reported that the worker was wearing earbuds while sitting next to the track with his back turned towards the train. According to the crew on the train, the horn was blown repeatedly and they began braking but they were unable to avoid the collision. The worker died at the scene.

The cause of death is listed as blunt force trauma. His identity has not yet been released but the coroner did say that the victim was a veteran of the United States Army.
