Old Fort, NC – Five-Car Collision Sends One Person to Hospital

Old Fort, NC (November 3, 2018) – In Old Fort, a piece of furniture fell off the of the interstate.

Old Fort, NC (November 3, 2018) – In Old Fort, a piece of furniture fell off the of the interstate in a five-car collision on Thursday afternoon, November 1. The accident happened around 2 p.m.

Police say that the accident happened on I-40 at the 74 mile marker. Carl Prince was driving his Chevy pickup truck and carrying a piece of furniture that fell onto the roadway. The vehicles behind the truck started slowing down, but one tractor-trailer failed to reduce their speed. The driver was identified as Walter Erwin Wiestling. Wiestling collided with a white Mercedes SUV driven by Billy Carol Matthews.

The vehicles then collided with two additional vehicles. A passenger in one of the vehicles was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Prince received charges of failing to secure a load and Wiestling was charged with failure to reduce speed. Various emergency departments responded to the accident scene.
