Putnam County, GA (December 28, 2018) – Police say that a deputy-involved car accident took place due to drowsy driving. The accident took place this past week in the early morning hours.
At the time, police say that a Putnam County Sheriff’s Deputy had been traveling on North Jefferson Street in Eatonton when he suddenly crossed the center line of traffic, crashing his patrol car. An SUV had been stopped at the intersection with Willie Bailey Street waiting to make a turn. This is when the deputy crossed the line and struck the SUV head-on.
The deputy claimed that they did not remember anything from the accident. However, he did say that he remembered patrolling the area before the accident took place.
The deputy was taken to the hospital and both parties received treatment for the injuries sustained due to the wreck. The deputy seemed to be confused following the accident and it was determined that he had fallen asleep at the wheel. The SUV driver spoke to police about the recollection of events.
Police continue their investigation into the events at this time.
We would like to take this time to extend our sympathies to the victims who have suffered as a result of this accident. It is important to know that you have many significant rights during this difficult time.
