Georgia ranked 36th in the nation in a new report on the worst drivers by state, which means Georgia drivers are safer than drivers in more than half of the 50 states.

Georgia also has the safest drivers in the Southeastern U.S., if you exclude Virginia and West Virginia, which finished 49th and 39th respectively.

The annual report from CarInsuranceComparison.com revealed Georgia is 48th in the nation for percentage of fatal car accidents involving a drunk driver. Georgia was also ranked 45th in the nation for percentage of fatal accidents involving speeding.

However, the Peach State has a lot of room for improvement in the other metrics from the report. The state was ranked 16th for percentage of fatal car accidents involving careless driving.

The report says careless driving is often a result of drivers being distracted and taking their eyes or minds off the road. Distracted driving accidents cause eight deaths and 1,161 injuries each day.

The most common driving distraction is cellphones, as approximately 64 percent of all car accidents involve cellphone usage, according to the report.

Georgia was also ranked 27th for fatality rate per 100 million vehicle miles traveled and 21st for fatal crashes involving failure to obey traffic signals, wear seat belts or driving with an invalid driver’s license.

Researchers used data from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study on the causes of fatal crashes to rank each state on five metrics. Rankings for each metric were added for a total score, with higher scores equating to better rankings.

The report emphasizes the need for everyone in Georgia to continue their good driving habits, such as avoiding drinking and driving, and improve upon bad habits, such as careless driving and failing to obey the rules of the road.
