 Thomas County, GA (October 04, 2018) – This is an update to a previous story that we posted yesterday.  On Monday night Thomas County police who were trying to serve a warrant for grand larceny became unwittingly involved in a pursuit that resulted in a multi-car accident and the escape of the suspect.

Deputies were attempting to serve a warrant on Chatham Drive. As they neared the home they noticed a car that was heading their way make an abrupt and illegal U-turn. The deputies then tried to make a routine traffic stop but the car sped off. The police pursued the suspect at high speed until the cruiser was struck on the passenger side by a white pickup truck at the intersection of Clay Street and Crawford Street.

The impact knocked the cruiser into the side of a parked car resulting in damage to all three cars.  The driver and the officer involved in the collision were both taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. They have both been released from the hospital at this time.

The police are asking for help identifying the driver that the police were in pursuit of at the time that this accident occurred.  The police are describing the driver of that vehicle as a “heavy-set black man” who was last seen driving a light colored Mercury Grand Marquis.  

The police have released the dash cam video of the chase and are asking members of the community to please help identify the driver of the fleeing car.  Georgia State Police continue to investigate this incident.
