HOSPITALS LOSE MEDICARE FUNDING

All of these facilities will lose one percent of this year’s Medicare payments, retroactive to October 2016. This will reduce the amount of money these hospitals have to take care of low-income patients and to teach medical residents.

This is the third straight year that Candler, MUMC and 11 other hospitals in Georgia have been hit with Medicare penalties.

MUMC Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ramon Meguiar criticized Medicare penalty programs, noting that his hospital takes in some of the sickest patients in the region because it has multiple critical care units and the only Level I trauma center and Level III neonatal intensive care unit in the region. These patients are often more susceptible to hospital-acquired infections.

A St. Joseph’s Hospital representative had similar criticisms, noting that his facility receives a lot of sick, high-risk patients due to referrals from hospice, nursing homes and St. Joseph’s own emergency departments. Other hospitals have different types of patients and that is why it is difficult to compare facilities.
