Since being installed about seven years ago, the number of crashes has steadily increased each year, from just six in 2011 to more than 30 in 2016, according to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Fortunately, none of these collisions have resulted in deaths, but several have caused injuries.

Injury crashes were more likely to occur on Saturdays, according to South Carolina Department of Public Safety data. Wednesdays and Thursdays were the days when the highest numbers of collisions occurred.

September and December are the months when the most property-damage crashes happened at the Bluffton Road roundabout.

Crashes were most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and least likely to occur between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m.

TIPS ON DRIVING THROUGH ROUNDABOUTS

The South Carolina Department of Transportation has several tips for safely navigating roundabouts:

  • Reduce your speed when you approach the roundabout
  • Switch to the left lane if you intend to make a left turn
  • Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout
  • Merge into the roundabout only when it is safe to do so
  • Drive slowly through the roundabout
  • Do not stop in the roundabout unless you are trying to avoid a collision
